Equine Reproduction Laboratory

Hobgoblins Equine Reproduction Centre has the advantage of having semen readily available from the top quality stallions standing at Hobgoblins Stud, but we are also happy to use  semen from the stallion of your choice, worldwide. We have established and successful programmes with proven results for artificial insemination (fresh, chilled and frozen semen); embryo transfer (fresh, chilled and frozen embryos) and semen collection / analysis (including semen testing and freezing for the UK and for export). We also have separate programmes for mares which are having trouble conceiving (“problem mares”), mares with a poor fertility history (“sub-fertile mares”) and mares which are at high-risk of developing problems during pregnancy or of foaling early (“high risk mares”).  We offer training of novice stallions to use the dummy mare and have semen collected, and semen evaluations either on semen collected at Hobgoblins or on semen shipped to us from referring practices / studs. This is a useful method of independent quality control for stallion owners or for those considering purchasing a stallion for breeding use. Dr Campbell also accepts referrals of individual cases from other Veterinary Practices in all areas of mare and stallion equine reproduction.

The facilities at Hobgoblins Equine Reproduction Centre include a mare examination area equipped with mare stocks and diagnostic ultrasound; a semen assessment laboratory and semen analysis and storage facilities; semen processing centre and frozen semen storage facilities; an embryo laboratory; facilities for chilling and packaging embryos; facilities for freezing embryos; liquid nitrogen storage tanks for storing frozen embryos; a semen collection area; a “dummy” mare for semen collections; and an ovariectomised mare for semen collections for stallions which cannot use the “dummy” mare.   We also have a number of embryo recipient mares for rent.  For high-risk mares we offer initial diagnosis and treatment; hospitalisation if necessary and regular screening programmes.  For foaling mares we have designated stables with 24 hour monitoring and a veterinary foaling-down and foal monitoring / treatment service.

The Breeding Barn

Hobgoblins Equine Reproduction Centre caters for all livery requirements by offering both indoor and classical stabling; stallion accommodation; large mare and foal boxes; individual paddocks and group turnout fields. We have a dedicated team of fully trained stud grooms as well as supervised veterinary and animal science students who will ensure that your mare, foal or stallion is looked after as an individual to the highest welfare standards. We also have a fully implemented biosecurity strategy which covers all of the venereal diseases (including C.E.M and Equine Viral Arteritis) and Equine Infectious Anaemia.
