Dr Madeleine Campbell

Hobgoblins Stud and Hobgoblins Equine Reproduction Centre is under the direction of resident Veterinary Surgeon Dr Madeleine Campbell, who is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and by the European College as a Specialist in Veterinary Reproduction (Equine). She is a Diplomate of the European College of Animal Reproduction (Equine) and holds a PhD in Equine Reproduction. Dr Campbell has been working in the field of equine reproduction since 1996, and has a particular interest in “problem” mares and in embryo transfer.

As the only Veterinary Surgeon in the UK to be recognised as a Specialist in Equine Reproduction by both the RCVS and the European College of Animal Reproduction, Dr Campbell is in demand as a teacher as well as a clinician. Dr Campbell lectures to undergraduate veterinary students as well as veterinary surgeons in Practice who wish to improve their knowledge of equine reproduction (post-graduate CPD). Dr Campbell is also the author of research, review articles and a contributing author to a text book on equine reproduction, and a frequent lecturer at international and national conferences. Some of these articles can be found on this website. Dr Campbell has recently been appointed Honorary Lecturer in Equine Reproduction at the Royal Veterinary College. As with all specialists, Dr Campbell’s clinical work is underwritten by research. We welcome final year veterinary students undertaking elective projects each year, and currently have a resident research intern, Amanda Bliss. On-going areas of research being directed by Dr Campbell include investigation of the effects of various drugs on dilation of the mare’s cervix; seminal plasma inflammatory mediators and the ultrasonography of uterine contractions. Dr Campbell is currently co-supervising a PhD research student at the Royal Veterinary College, who is investigating failure of cervical relaxation in the mare. This is an area which Dr Campbell is particularly interested in, and she will present a paper describing her novel ultrasound technique of measuring cervical dilation at the International Symposium on Equine Reproduction in Kentucky in July 2010.

In addition to her clinical and research work, Dr Campbell contributes to the wider equine veterinary community. She is currently President of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA), Chair of BEVA’s Artificial Insemination Committee; a member of the Horse Race Betting Levy Board’s sub-committee on equine venereal diseases and a validator for the European School of Veterinary Postgraduate studies
